"Otis Redding is the greatest soul singer of all time, and I’ll defy any man who says he’s not, but last night... last night at Joe's Pub in NYC I saw Eli “Parperboy” Reed actually channel the spirit of Otis and maybe even Jackie Wilson to boot. His voice is so soulfully powerful that my nerve endings actually ignited, the hair on my arms stood up and burst into flame. Eli’s band the True Loves provided the groove and the horns to frame a performance the likes of which can only be seen in grainy monochromatic TV footage from the mid-sixties, the apogee of American soul. It’ll be a while before I wipe the smile off my face from the late night revue, which ended in the wee hours."
