Buddy Holly Lives
Date  Saturday, January 31st, 2009
Featuring: Willie Nile, Pat Dinizio, The Kennedys (as Annie & the Midnight Shift), Locksley, Nicole Atkins, The Grip Weeds, McCarthy Trenching & The Riff Brothers.

Concert Notes:
"Buddy Holly Lives" commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the death of rock legend Buddy Holly, an event commonly referred to as "The Day the Music Died." The festival was a celebration of the life and music of Holly, a pioneering songwriter, performer and producer. The concert event was one of Vintage Vinyl's largest-scale performance events to date, assembling 8 different acts on stage in tandem, each performing a few of their Buddy Holly favorites. The instore also raised money for the Light of Day Foundation, a charity committed to researching a cure for Parkinson's Disease.

While the limited Buddy Holly songbook led to some repeats in set lists, each set of performers brought something different to the table, sometimes dramatically so. Folk group McCarthy Trenching delivered some haunting hillbilly blues interpretations of otherwise peppy tunes. The Grip Weeds posited a world in which Buddy Holly lived into the 60s and started doing acid, then submitted an example of Buddy gone psychodelic. Locksley's 60's-inspired pop rock brought a youthful vitality to the set, performing a medley of several of Buddy's most recognizable hits. Pete & Maura Kennedy's guitar jam on "Rave On" was a highlight, as was the high-energy rendition by Willie Nile (accompanied by songwriting partner Frankie Lee and friend Bruce Tunkel, who is the only person to perform at every Vintage Vinyl festival so far.) Pat Dinizio of Smithereens fame closed the event with some more obscure Holly tunes for hardcore fans.

The success of Buddy Holly Lives led to Vintage Vinyl's continuing series of tributes to prominent rock songwriters from Bob Dylan to Paul Westerberg.
